Project Education

One of Cameroon’s biggest problems is access to education. Roughly 30% of children there have no birth certificate, and according to Cameroonian law, this means they can’t move on to high school.  Because of this, their career choices are limited to agriculture or hard labor regardless of their aspirations.  Limited access to education leads to a shortage of doctors, engineers, and teachers in the whole country creating a cyclical problem.

Ascovime is setting out to change this with Project EducationEach student needs $19 to pay for the four steps it takes to create the birth certificate.  A doctor must determine the child’s age and parents; a judge must make those findings official; 2 passport photos need to be provided; and the mayor must print the actual document. However, for Cameroonians, $19 represents the monthly income for an entire family where most of that money must be spent on food.

For $19, you can cover the entire cost of one child and singlehandedly give them a new future. Our goal is to get 500 new students into high school and on to university.  Two public universities were recently built nearby in Garoua and Ngaoundre and extremely low tuition, scholarships, and the fact that most students stay with nearby family while in school, means that many of the kids we help have a chance of going on to university and having a real future.  Every Ascovime member works as a volunteer, so every dollar you give goes directly to a student in need.
